Our friend’s record of the suits drawn from the deck is then a random variable with four equally probable outcomes. Our friend then replaces the card, reshuffles the deck and repeats. Our friend shuffles the deck, draws a card and records its suit without showing us. Next, consider a deck of cards with the jokers removed. Here and in the examples below, consider that ‘the cost of encapsulating information’ is analogous to ‘the number of questions required to describe a random variable’. The number of binary questions we need to ask to describe each outcome is one. You can discern the outcome of any individual coin toss by asking just one binary (yes-no) question: was the outcome a head ? 1 Equally, we can ask whether it was a tail and still end up with the same knowledge. Your friend tosses the coin and hides the result from you. Say we have some random variable, like a coin toss. Illustrating the Concept of Shannon Entropy The key is to divorce the information theoretical definition of information from our everyday concept of meaning. This sounds a bit whacky, but will become clearer as we introduce some equations and examples. Information has some meaning, otherwise it’s not really information. In Shannon’s Information Theory, information relates to the effort or cost to describe some variable, and Shannon Entropy is the minimum number of bits that are needed to do so, on average. In everyday usage, we equate the word information with meaning. This concept of information is somewhat counter-intuitive. In this context, information content is really about quantifying predictability, or conversely, randomness. Measured in bits, Shannon Entropy is a measure of the information content of data, where information content refers more to what the data could contain, as opposed to what it does contain. They also beat the casinos by counting cards at Blackjack.īetween Information Theory and digital circuit design (and less so his gambling escapades), Shannon’s work essentially ushered in the digital world we find ourselves in today. Not being one to let his genius go to waste, he and his buddy Ed Thorpe secretly used wearable computers to beat roulette in Vegas casinos by synchronising their computers with the spins of the wheel. Later, around 1948, he discovered Information Theory, which leverages his unique-at-the-time understanding that computers could express numbers, words, pictures, even audio and video as strings of binary digits. Most notably, he was the first to describe the theory of electrical circuit design (in his Master’s thesis at the age of 21, no less). Shannon (the man, not the entropy) was one of those annoying people that excels at everything he touches. Specifically, we’re going to tinker with the concept of Shannon Entropy. The purpose of this post is to scratch the surface of the markets from an information theoretic perspective, using tools developed by none other than the father of the digital age, Claude Shannon. We chose s to satisfy the following inequalities. Before you commit your precious time to read this post on Shannon Entropy, I need to warn you that this is one of those posts that market nerds like myself will get a kick out of, but which probably won’t add much of practical value to your trading. The size of the domain is $ n^r $ and the size of the range is $ m^s $. The range of E must be greater than or equal to the size of the domain or otherwise two different messages in the domain would have to map to the same encoding in the range. To prove this is correct function for the entropy we consider an encoding $E: A^r \rightarrow B^s$ that encodes blocks of r letters in A as s characters in B. In this case the entropy only depends on the of the sizes of A and B. And if event $A$ has a certain amount of surprise, and event $B$ has a certain amount of surprise, and you observe them together, and they're independent, it's reasonable that the amount of surprise adds.įrom here it follows that the surprise you feel at event $A$ happening must be a positive constant multiple of $- \log \mathbb \log_m(n)$$ It's reasonable to ask that it be continuous in the probability. How surprising is an event? Informally, the lower probability you would've assigned to an event, the more surprising it is, so surprise seems to be some kind of decreasing function of probability.

I appreciate the help but this is not a Linux environment. You'll want rwx or r-x on directories.Īlso, any user can delete any file if they have write and execute on the file's directory, regardless of the permission modes or ownership of the file. If you set a directory permission to r-x, the user will be able to read the directory contents, and cd to the directory, but will not be able to remove, or create entries, in the directory. Write and execute on a directory means that the user can create, delete, rename and link entries in the directory. But "w"rite is not operative unless the user also has execute permission on the directory. Write permission on a directory allows users to create files (including subdirectories), in the directory. Absent "x" on a directory, a user won't be able to cd into the directory. The execute permission bit in Linux controls directory access. I setup a TEST first to make sure this was going to work at it failed miserably. We don't want them to create sub folders in the main shared folder, so they all have read access to it to map the drive and rw to the folders they need access to. We setup security groups for each folder and added users according to what folders they should have access to. Any help would be appreciated.Įach sub folder needs to have separate permissions. I tried it on another QNAP with out windows ACL turn on and got the same results. We have advanced folder permissions turn on and windows ACL turn on. The permissions are showing the same on the QNAP gui and in windows explorer. I have check the effective permissions and they have full control. The drive maps no problem, the user can open the folders they have rw access to and cannot open the other folders, they also cannot write to the folder the have rw access to. Each sub folder needs to have separate permissions. Currently all user have access to all folders. I tried doing a chmod and chgrp but that didn't seem to have any impact. We have a shared folder in our QNAP for "Finance Users" We have security group that all "Finance Users" are in and we use that to map the drive in a GPO. If I open my samba share as root then I can write to the folders. Below is my smb.conf, the filesystem permissions, and the steps I followed. To me it looks like I have the correct permissions. For some reason I cannot write to my samba share. It is as easy to set up as the developers could make it, the recording is flawless, the editing capabilities are incredibly powerful, and truly set it apart from most of the competition. Camtasia for Mac is currently available at the Camtasia website as a free trial, and can be purchased for $99US, or a 5-pack for $495US.TechSmith’s Camtasia is one of the best screen recording tools we’ve reviewed. I would probably heed that advice when working on a more important project. I tried it and didn't have any problems - but it was for a short record/export experiment and I'm guessing they have good reason for pointing out the potential conflict. Also, TechSmith warns against running Perian with Camtasia. If you run any USB->DVI hardware, be sure to disconnect it before you launch the application. There's some mismatch between the PC and Mac export capabilities, though, making cross-platform projects difficult ( file format comparison).Ĭamtasia for Mac requires that all of your video cards be Quartz Extreme-enabled. The "Advanced Export" option provides the opportunity to tweak settings and export to all the standard formats. There's a default export which gave me a 10.5MB QuickTime file for a 47-second clip, at a 960圆00 resolution. I'm hoping that's not a missing feature, as it seems relatively important to me.Ī complete array of QuickTime formats can be exported, and presets for YouTube, and iTunes are included. I haven't figured that out in my brief trial, and haven't had a chance to ask yet. The only problem I noticed immediately was with changing colors of library elements (arrows, etc.). Additionally, you can highlight the foreground window, add text and shape callouts, and work with imported media. It automatically determines what the point of focus at any given time should be, and zooms that area. One of the coolest features I played with was the SmartFocus action, which can be applied to an entire clip or just a region in the editor. For a complete feature comparison, check the TechSmith website or grab the comparison PDF.Ī quick run-through with a review copy convinced me that this is some serious competition for ScreenFlow. However, its capabilities in the area of direct media manipulation are quite well-developed. Some of the features it's lacking in comparison to its PC counterpart include region recording, narration-only recording and ScreenDraw. While it hasn't exactly reached feature-parity with the PC version, it's been quite a pleasure to try out. At the same $99US price tag as ScreenFlow, Camtasia is offering a very similar interface with some impressive capabilities.Ĭamtasia has long been considered a heavyweight in the PC world, and its Mac debut has been anxiously awaited. That seems to have changed with the release of Camtasia for Mac. Up until yesterday, I didn't really think it had much serious competition in the professional screencasting field. It hasn't exactly been a secret that I (and several others at TUAW) have been big fans of ScreenFlow since its release. This increase in daily transaction volume bears a direct correlation to the upward spiral of gas fees.Įthereum’s Altair upgrade had a significant part to play in the recent figures around the network. As Ethereum climbed to set a new all-time high of $4,455, daily transactions received a jolt that saw it hover around $18 billion. The recent spike in gas fees is intricately linked to the recent bullish trends of Ethereum on the charts. Generally, gas prices spike when there is an increased demand for ETH in the market. It is seen as the de facto home of DApps, DeFi, and NFT but skyrocketing gas fees see it lose its position of prominence. The inefficacy of the hard forks has accelerated the drive towards Ethereum 2.0 that offers radical changes to the network, including uniformity in gas fees.ĮTH is the second-largest cryptocurrency in the world and has a market capitalization of over $500 billion. Since then, fees have fluctuated widely, leaning towards the upside to the sheer dismay of investors. In August, optimism filled the air over Ethereum’s London hard fork as it was touted to solve the problem of rising gas fees. A week ago, average gas fees hovered around $20, and 7 days later, it has risen by a staggering 100%. It has been rising steadily since June and the current trajectory shows an increase of 2,200%. It is on this premise that several ETH killers are hinging their attempts to dethrone the network and to stifle their effects, Ethereum is making frantic efforts to reduce the soaring fees.Īt press time, the average transaction fee on Ethereum stood at $51.45 and this figure is not a bolt from the blue. Perhaps, the single biggest argument against Ethereum by its critics is the exorbitant gas prices associated with the network. Gas prices for the network are rising at an alarming rate despite recent upgrades. While investors are patting their backs and clinking their glasses over Ethereum’s new highs, a dark cloud hovers above the network. Ethereum is still reeling from the effects of hitting a new high at the end of October. The average gas fee for a single transaction is now at $51, according to information from BitInfoCharts.Ethereum gas fees have risen by 2,000% in less than five months to the dismay of network users. Radians are another commonly used and standard unit for measuring and are extensively used in mathematics. It must have been written sometime during the 1500 – 2000 BCE. There are also empirical evidences to suggest that Indian might also have used degrees and it is clearly mentioned in the Rigveda an ancient collection of Hindu Hymns. There are evidences to suggest that the earliest trigonometry which was used by Babylonian astronomers and also their Greek successors made use of Degree as a unit of measurement. Though the exact reason for choosing degree as a unit of angle and rotation is not known there are reasons to believe that it was a part of the sexagesimal numeric system. Hence we will also find out how this can be done. There also would be the need to convert degree to radian and vice-versa. For example when it comes to building homes, building, bridges, roads, railway lines, airports, shipyards and other infrastructure constructions they are very much in use and extremely vital and critical. They are extremely useful in various day to day activities. We will also try and learn about the history pertaining to these geometrical measurement terms which are so commonly. Anyhow we would like to reopen the topic once again and try to understand these terms from a layman’s perspective. We may not have shown much interest about it. If we look back at our school and college days we certainly would have come across terms such as angle and degrees. If you are a student with an inclination and interest towards math and geometry then you will certainly find the next few lines of interest. Smart home assistants like Google Home, Apple Homepod, and Amazon Echo can generate white noise as well-all you need to do is ask them to. You don’t have to buy a white noise machine or download an app to reap the benefits of white noise. However, studies have shown that pink noise can help sharpen your memory, so it might be better for studying, with white noise ideal for sleeping. While many people find these noises to be more relaxing than staticky white noise, pink noise might be less effective than white noise at helping your brain relax and tune out unwanted noise. Pink noise is often confused for white noise, but it differs because it has more energy in the lower register, so it sounds like white noise but with more of a bass rumble think of ambient noises like flowing rivers, thunderstorms, or wind. There are other colors of noise besides white, and pink noise is the second-most commonly talked about sound hue. The way white noise is distributed helps drown out any noises that distract or stimulate our brains when we are trying to go to sleep, like traffic or a snoring partner, thus helping us get a good night’s sleep. White noise is soothing to the human brain, as it contains constant noise of equal intensity across every audible frequency. It’s no coincidence that many people think it’s easier to fall asleep (and to get quality sleep) when there’s a fan on or when the air conditioner is running. Catastrophic incidents involving highly hazardous materials or activities occur so infrequently that most organizations never have the unfortunate, but educating, opportunity of experiencing one. Operating diligence and management effectiveness can be easily dulled by a sense of false security – leading to lapses in critical prevention systems. Eliminating serious incidents requires constant reminders of the vulnerabilities inherent in hazardous activities. When pre-established engineering or operational constraints are consciously violated, with no resulting negative consequences, an organizational mindset is encouraged that more easily sanctions future violations. This can occur despite well-established technical evidence, or knowledge of operational history, that suggests such violations are more likely to lead to a serious incident. |
